- True Colors, is a non-profit organization that works with other social service agencies, schools, organizations, and within communities to ensure that the needs of sexual and gender minority youth are both recognized and competently met. The organization trains more than 2400 people annually, organizes the largest LGBT youth conference in the country with more than 2000 attendees and manages the state’s only LGBT mentoring program. - Kids in Crisis provides 24-hour support to help children and families resolve conflict. Crisis Counselors work through any situation and meet face-to-face for intervention and assistance. For those who need more than short-term counseling, Kids in Crisis offers the Teen House for adolescents. These homes, complete with a fully-staffed, state-of-the-art medical clinic, provide therapeutic care in a safe, nurturing environment for up to 20 children at any one time. Additionally, Kids in Crisis provides prevention programs throughout Fairfield County, Connecticut. The prevention programs include SafeTalk, a series of workshops for elementary schools, which teaches children to be safe from bullying and abuse, and TeenTalk, which offers student outreach counselors to area high schools to help adolescents with personal and family pressures.
Bridgeport:
- Gay Straight Alliance meets at Housatonic Community Technical College in Bridgeport that meets weekly for socialization, support and social action. Contact advisor Mickey Reed at 332-5214.
New Haven:
- GLBT Youth Group meets every Monday, 4:30-6 PM, at the NHGLCC, 50 Fitch St., New Haven. Geared to 14 to 20-year-olds, this group is facilitated by professionals on a rotating basis. For more information contact drggon@javanet.com.
Norwalk:
- OutSpoken, the Triangle Community Center's support group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and questioning youth meets every Sunday from 4-6 PM at TCC. Most participants come from Fairfield County, though we've welcomed members from the New Haven, Hartford and Westchester areas. We talk about family, school, work, friends, relationships, movies, politics, fitting into both the gay and straight world, and much more. We support each other.
We have held dances, a holiday party, and a potluck dinner; joined TCC members at Bloodroot; attended TCC Movie Nights and do outreach and speaking sessions before groups In addition, we've heard guest speakers and health educators; participated in such statewide events as the Children of the Shadows conference, the Wesleyan Congress, and the New London People's Forum; did the AIDS walk; and attended PFLAG meetings.
